Swamp Creature Dress

Every year, I make a nice dress to wear to holiday parties. I end up going to several, and for the most part, the other people there don’t overlap, so I can wear the same dress a few times. This dress will be this year’s holiday attire. It’s actually a dress and a blouse. The […]

Winter Weight, Spring Color

I am such a sucker for these Chado Ralph Rucci designs! That shoulder line gets me every time. The pattern I used was part of the new Vogue releases, 1437. The pattern calls for a rather involved self-lining technique. Because I’m using a heavyweight fabric, I chose to forgo the self-lining. And because the fabric […]

Dyeing Fabric in a Front-Loading Washing Machine

Yes, Virginia, you can dye fabric in a front loader. I do it all the time. This post documents my method. Please keep in mind that your results may vary. Equipment and supplies: Maytag Neptune front-loading washer. The model I have dates from 2001. A water heater that is set dangerously high Dharma acid dye […]

Well-Placed Accents

This dress is finished just in time for the warm weather in the northeastern US this week! The fabric started out the lime green color, then I tie-dyed it blue, leaving some lime green as an embellishment. I like the way it turned out.

Spring Shibori

Today I shibori-dyed the fabric for my current project.

Creating Contrast

My current project is a shirt with a contrast placket. Rather than picking 2 coordinating fabrics, I took some of my shirting fabric and dyed it orange to create the contrast.

A Little Bit of 40’s

When I saw this print fabric, I immediately thought of a 1940’s style dress. It may be the color scheme of the print that put me in a WWII mood. The print is really lovely; it is a floral print on top of a floral brocade. I just love fabrics with a lot going on. […]

Breaking my resolution

I’ve been doing pretty well with my New Year’s resolution to dial back the crazy. Now I guess I’m looking for a little relief from neutrals and tailoring, so my current project involves dye effects.

Girl Scout Tie Dye

I had my Girl Scout troop over yesterday to work on tie-dyeing troop shirts. I screen printed our troop number on white shirts, then we dyed them together using Procion dyes from Dharma. I only have 5 girls in the troop, so I can do stuff like this that would not be possible with a […]

More Stephen Sprouse than Wild Animal

My 7-year-old daughter was looking over my shoulder while I was reading September Vogue and saw a Versace coat that she just had to have. It was a black-and-white stripe fur with a black-and-red dot fur trim. But, she said, “I want it as a dress”. I gave that some thought, and realized that I […]
