DD is obsessed with the childrens television show Backyardigans. I must admit, I kind of like it too. For those of you who are not familiar with it, there is a character Uniqua who often dresses as different superheroes. These superheres only last one episode. Since the superheroes are so ephemeral, corporate america has not seen fit to offer Uniqua superhero costumes as mass produced items. DD is taken with one particular episode where Uniqua dresses as Flowergirl, and requested a Uniqua-as-Flowergirl costume for Christmas.
It was a lot of fun to make. The white and pink are bamboo knit from Fabricmart. The flower in the front is worked in reverse applique. The lighter pink on the flower is a scrap of silk taffeta, and the green stem is 4-ply silk left over from another project. The pattern is based on a t-shirt pattern from Ottobre.
I had the most fun making the mask. I took a layer of white and a layer of pink and stuck them together with steam-a-seam. Then I cut out the mask shape and quilted the layers together. I cut the petals from the 2 layers stuck together, as well, and sewed them around the eyes. It is surprisingly comfortable to wear.
For the gloves, I took an old pair of white gloves that we had lying about and added some gauntlets.
I am going to try to resist giving this to her right away. After Christmas, I’ll get a photo of her wearing the whole ensemble.

Okay I can hear that Backyardigans theme song in my head now and won’t lose it for hours! *LOL* This is one of the Little Prince’s favorite shows too…and this is the cutest, most adorablest costume. Boy are you going to be The Mom on Christmas morning! Adorable…simply adorable!

Ha, ha…that is too cool. My boys also love the Backyardigans, it used to be the one show they could watch before bedtime, and when they say goodbye and go off for their snack on the show, my boys would say goodnight to their backyardigan friends and head off to bed themselves. Love the songs too, I’m usually waiting for the show to end to put them to bed and always sing along with the kids.
Great costume. Ever since my apron I am on a costume kick. Next up Robin Hood I think. Dressing up box must be filled!

I skipped over here from Sweet Juniper. My daughter has (sadly) gotten too old to appreciate the Backyardigans anymore, but Uniqua has always been my favorite character. And I must say, the costume you designed for her ROCKS.

You don’t make these to sell you do you? My daughter is obsessed with being flower girl after watching that episode like 6 months ago! Would love to surprise her for Christmas and I am shockingly bad at sewing.
