My current mood is causing me to be a bit obsessed with the shirt. This black silk one should be a useful addition to my wardrobe. While I was making it, I pulled out 5 or 6 other fabrics from my closet to make more shirts with. The pattern came from Book of Mens Shirts by Ryuichiro Shimazaki. I traced off the smallest size, and added a bust dart to make it a womens shirt.
The silk is not as firm as a cotton shirting fabric would be, so I made French seams instead of flat felled seams. Other than that, it’s constructed like a regular shirt.

You put me to shame…..
This shirt looks flawless! (So if it’s not, ssshhh!) Wonderful job and great pick on the fabric.
A beautiful, chic basic!
Lovely drape to the sleeve and prefect plackets…ooo I would love to own one of those! Great job! Did you have any trouble with the fabric or did it behave? Did you use cotton thread and a sharp needle? Any tips for the rest of us?
The fabric was fine. I did start with a new needle, and used the same cotton thread that I always use. I interfaced the cuffs, collar and placket with silk organza. It did shift a bit when topstitching, so I tried to only topstitch where it really needed it, like the plackets and one row at the base of the collar band.
Absolutely beautiful work, as always. I’m a wee bit obsessed with the idea of men’s style shirts in silk at the mo too … I just don’t know if I’m up to the challenge!
Absolutely beautiful. Black silk! what luxury – I want one.
