Man, this coat is taking a long time! I only have the sleeves, shoulder pads, and final press left to do, so for Christmas I want some time and inclination to finish this coat before next weekend.
When I work on a tailored garment, I always do the finishing work before I put the sleeves on. I find that, once the garment LOOKS complete, I think it SHOULD be complete, so I resent having to do things like closures and hemming the lining. So, at this point, it just awaits sleeves and a final press. And I have made some progress on the sleeves, so they should be on soon.
About the photos: I was trying to wait until I had some natural light to take the photos by, but the weather has been so dismal during our limited daylight hours lately that it felt like I was waiting for a unicorn, so I present you with poorly lit flash photos instead.
Oh, and I found shoes! I ordered them from Zappos yesterday. I hope I still like them in person. Actually, I found them elsewhere online for less money, but the other site was “final sale”, and I need the ability to return them, so I bought from Zappos.

Shoes!

I’ve loved watching this coat evolve! So, so elegant. The special touches are divine. Your creations really get me thinking….not that I have anything concrete to show yet…but those ideas are percolating. The shoes are perfect! Hope they work for you.
I have a bad case of SERIOUS coat envy at the moment! And you hemmed the lining by hand. Hmph. That *does* beat all! :). Love the details… The emboidery on the undercollar and the interior. Gorgeous! And y’know, I resent all those finishing details sometimes, too. Great idea to get them over with first!
Claudine this coat is AMAZING. The attention to detail is impeccable, but then again you show that love and attention to all of your garments that you sew. Beautiful job.
Oh Claudine, that is stunning! I’m literally speechless.
When sewing coats and jackets, the hemming comes last, but when I work on a shirt, I follow the same path as you do. I like to hem it before attaching sleeves. It somehow feels good to know that part of the garment is finished and there’s no work left to go back to.
Just gorgeous, Claudine. What interesting details! You are going to be so turned out. And those shoes are amazing! By the way, I like the new blog name! (Though I liked the old name, too, but this name is very fun.)
Thanks! I thought I needed a more light-hearted name for the blog.
it’s stunning so far. Can’t wait to see it on you!
This is so lovely!! I hope event pics are soon- those shoes….purr, purr!
It’s gorgeous. The end details always make me feel like I’m walking in quicksand. What did you line it with?
Thanks! The lining is silk gazar. There’s some detail on the lining here.
Great idea to do finish work before the sleeves. The coat is amazing.
It is looking gorgeous, Claudine! Please finish this pronto so we can see the whole ensemble. Have a great holiday!
Wow, that is one gorgeous coat! Impeccable work, as always!
Merry Christmas Claudine!
Breathtaking!
I know the holidays has everyone busy as can be, but I wanted to let you know I nominated you for a blog award. Here’s the link: http://peanutbuttermacrame.blogspot.com/2012/12/blog-awards-and-merry-merry.html
Leaving the sleeves to the end is a clever trick. Lately for whatever reasons many of the patterns I’ve been sewing have neckline finishes done early in the process. It has so spoiled me because I hate finishing the neckline, for some reason. I hope you got the coat finished on time!
